Alfred Victor Garguilo"AL" Garguilo,99 years old, passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on May 9, 2021. He was born in Little Falls,NY on May 27,1922. When America entered WWII,Al volunteered and served as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was injured and spent 18 months at Walter Reed Hospital.In 1954,Al vacationed in Daytona Beach and never left. He eventually became the Director of Recreation and served temporary assignments as Chief of Police and Mayor. AL was responsible for bringing the Speedway to Daytona along with Embry Riddle. His development of Recreation in Daytona Beach led to a request from then President John F.Kennedy for a meeting which took place in AL's home.AL once defended the American flag at The Bandshell when members of a militant group of protesters attempted to take it down.President Nixon sent him a letter of commendation for his patriotism. Over his years of service to the city of Daytona Beach, he was the recipient of numerous awards for his outstanding service.Al retired in 1981 and married his loving wife, Justine in 1982. From that day on he was quick to let everyone he met know how lucky he was to have the "Best" wife in the world.After retirement his hobby was handicapping the horses. He bet on one horse a day somewhere in the country and most always won. AL loved growing fruit trees, vegetables and simply being with his wife and family.Al is preceded in death by his father,mother and 2 sisters. He is survived by his wife,Justine,his four children, Hilary Smith (Tom),Mark (Sara),Greg (Dee),Lisa(Rick),three sisters,Fran,Midge,Dorothy,three brothers,Frank,Louis,Bobby, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Al was truly a REMARKABLE man and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.Those who wish may leave condolences for the family here on our website.
