Obituary

Bernard Paul Carey, 87, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away on April 16, 2020 at 1:47 AM at the Hospice Care Center of Port Orange.

Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, funeral services at Our Lady of Hope, the burial following the service at Brevard Veterans Cemetery, Titusville, Florida, and a celebration of life will be held at his son's home, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being made by Cardwell Baggett and Summers Funeral Home.

Bernie was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts to Lucy and John Carey on November 21, 1932. He moved to Daytona Beach with his parents in 1948 and went to Mainland High School, which at the time was located on 3 rd Ave. in Daytona Beach. In 1952, at the age of 20, Bernie was inducted into the United State Army and proudly served 2 years in the Chemical Corps. After returning from the Korean war in 1955, he enrolled in the journeyman plumbers trade school at Mary Karl School. After graduation, he was employed by Ruland Brothers Plumbing company for several years. During that time, he installed many of the plumbing systems at Cape Canaveral. He was very proud that hone of the rockets he worked on, carried John Glen into space.

In 1963, he opened Carey Plumbing Co. Soon after, he enlisted a good friend, Ronald Harvley, to become his partner. Carey and Harvely plumbing were born and became one of the top plumbing companies in Daytona Beach for many years. The completed many instillations in large ocean front motels/hotels, Daytona Beach International Speedway, Halifax Hospital, Florida Health Care and Daytona Beach Kennel Club.

Bernie was active for many years in the local plumber's union and served for 20 years as a Dayton Beach reserve police officer. It was a position which he enjoyed very much. He served the community with distinction and was proud to wear the uniform.

Bernie was a big sports fan and loved the Florida Gators and New England Patriots. He was well known and respected within the Daytona Beach community. He was most known as someone you could count on to do the right thing, always willing to help anyone who needed it and was generous to a fault.

Bernie was married to the love of his life, Marjorie Carey in 1963. He is preceded in death by his mother and father Lucy and John Carey, wife Marjorie Carey, brother James Carey, sister-in-law Alice Carey, sister Barbara Harbuck, and brother-in-law William Harbuck, Sr.

Bernie is survived by his son John Carey of Ormond Beach, daughters Bonnie Weiler-Sagraves of South Daytona, Wendy Weiler-Reed & Max Reed of Port Orange, Beth Martin of Port Orange, brother John Carey & Andrina Carey of Ormond Beach, grandchildren Jacob Sagraves of Tulsa Oklahoma, Alexis Sagraves-Jones & Sam Jones of Port Orange, Vanessa Carey & Victoria Carey of Denver, Colorado, and great grandchildren Elliot Rice of Denver, Colorado and Lana Rae Jones of Port Orange, Florida. Many nieces and nephews as well as Angie & Howard Culpepper of South Daytona whom he loved like his own daughter and son.

Memorials may be given to Port Orange Halifax Hospice.

The family of Bernie Carey wishes to extend our sincere thanks to all the Florida Health Care Doctors and Halifax Hospice Nurses that have taken such good care of him during his lengthy illness and final days.
