Obituary

Bertran Fredrick Wallace was born in Waco, Texas, to Ivory Wallace and Mozell Hill Wallace, the third of seven children. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Kansas City, MO as an ROTC Cadet Captain, with Honors in 1935. He continued his education at Lincoln University, Jefferson City, MO, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. He also earned a Masters Degree in Education from Columbia University, New York City. Bertran served in WWII and the Korean War, retiring in 1978 with the rank of Major in the U.S. Army Military Police Corp. His WWII and Korean War Story is in the Library of Congress as part of The Veterans History Project. As a result of his contribution he was chosen by Volusia Honors Air to travel to Washington, D.C. with 99 other WWII veterans to visit Military Museums. Bertran's post-military career began in New York City in Composition & Machine Typesetting for the New York Daily News. He then became a teacher of printing at the New York School of Printing. He also served as a teacher-trainer at State University of New York and as an Adjunct Professor at the New Jersey State College. Later he became Director of Occupational Education at New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, and Yonkers Public Schools, all in New York. Finally he served as Associate Superintendent of Career, Continuing and Occupational Education for Boston Public Schools. Bertran served in many capacities in the educational system for the Volusia County School Board in Daytona Beach, FL, including participating in Creekside Middle School's "Read Across America" program. He was also a member of the Volusia County "Teacher of the Year Committee". He was a speaker for Minority Students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and participated in Bethune-Cookman University's Social Science Veterans Project. In addition to his many accomplishments, Bertran was a member of Alpha Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Daytona Beach Choral Society and Daytona Beach Rotary Club West. He served as a Board Member for the American Heart Association and WORC East Central Florida. He was a Founding Member of the Brooklyn Guardsmen, New York. Bertran was a faithful member of The United Presbyterian Church where he was an Ordained Elder and member of the Choral Choir. Bertran had many hobbies including acting and modeling, but his greatest passions were singing, golf and of course his specialty, speaking. He served as the Men's Golf Association President at Pelican Bay Golf Course. His greatest accomplishment was his marriage to his late wife, Evelyn Jenkins Wallace for 58 years. They had four daughters, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bertran F. Wallace leaves to mourn four loving daughters; Rikki Creecy (William) Cincinnati, OH; Debra Ramsey, Daytona Beach, FL; Valencia Wallace (Randolph) Yonkers, NY; Adrienne Wallace, Daytona Beach, FL. Four precious grandchildren, Leah Vaden (Karl) Cleveland, OH; Joycia Ramsey, Atlanta, GA; William S. Creecy, IV, Cincinnati, OH; Larry A. Duren, II, Washington, D.C. Two darling great grandchildren, Justin and Maya Vaden, Cleveland, OH. Two sisters-in law: Vivian Popielarski, Daytona Beach, FL; Willie Stewart (Emerson), Queensboro, MD, close family friend Mary Carter, Daytona Beach, FL, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, surrogate sons and daughters, and many lifelong friends. Services for Bertran F. Wallace will be held Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM at The United Presbyterian Church, 730 Beville Road, Daytona Beach, FL 32114. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in his memory to WORC, Inc., 1100 Jimmy Ann Drive, Daytona Beach, FL 32117. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Cardwell Funeral Home. Condolences may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
