Doris J. Godbey, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away on Friday, July 16th, 2021, at age 76. Doris was born November 15, 1944, the daughter of Cay and Goldie (Baker) Watts in Lost Creek, Kentucky.
In Breathitt County, Kentucky, Doris was surrounded by a warm and loving family and her cherished mountains. While attending Berea college, she met and fell in love with her husband Ruel, who brought her to Daytona Beach. Doris graduated from Bethune Cookman College and spent most of her career working in its financial aid office. Doris also devoted her time to the Halifax Baptist Association, where she was especially active in the youth and raceway ministries. Her heart led her to wherever she felt she could do the greatest good, whether it be youth in church, students in need, or children as Bubbles the clown.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren: Rhonda and David Ritch, their children Rebecca and Stephen Ori, Joseph Ritch and Shane Bagwell, and Clifton Ritch; Ruel Jr. (Kevin) and Tiffany Godbey, their children Derek Jensen, Malachi Jensen, Lauren Godbey, and Elijah Godbey; her siblings: Brenda Smith, Charles Watts, and Fred Watts; and many other cousins, friends, and loved ones.
She was preceded in death by; her husband Dr. Ruel Godbey, Sr., and her parents Cay and Goldie Watts.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, July 20th at Spruce Creek Baptist Church, 1952 Taylor Creek Rd, Port Orange, Florida 32137. The service, officiated by pastors Steve Loy, Ronnie Barton, and Charles Mims will be streamed live online for those who are unable to attend in person. Arrangements are under the direction and care of Cardwell Baggett & Summers Funeral Home, 301 Big Tree Rd, South Daytona, Florida 32119. (386) 767-0120. In lieu of flowers, donations in Doris's honor can be made to Berea College or Bethune Cookman University.
