Obituary

Elizabeth Johnson, 96, and the last surviving child of the pioneering families of Shanks and Foster, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. She was an incredible lady of indomitable spirit, immense courage, deep convictions and eternal love for family and all living creatures. She was one of eight children born to Edith and Bert Foster. Growing up on their farm on Big Tree Road during the 1920's, life was challenging, but extremely rich in memories she so fondly enjoyed recalling Marring the love of her life in 1940 Marvin, now deceased, they became partners in life and business. They enjoyed traveling, fishing, cookingand each other. That same year, they built their home in the Ocean Dunes development, which was sparsely populated at the time. Located between the river and the ocean with most of the dunes covered in palmetto bushes, it was an ideal setting for the young couple. Even as time passed, she maintained an active lifestyle with brisk walks, extended rides on her bicycle, and carefully tending to her immaculate yard. She carefully placed and tended every plant and tree to create a beautiful safe haven for all the living creatures that visited her sanctuary. Although she never had children of her own, she thoroughly enjoyed her large extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as her wonderfully supportive neighbors. In her final years, her little front porch was her window to the world. She thrived on watching the many birds, turtles, cats and dogs taking respite there. Elizabeth remained ever watchful of her neighbors and their homes. She felt protective of them and they have, in turn, been lovingly protective of her. A celebration of her amazing life and her legacy will be held on Friday May 17, 2013 at 1:00 P.M at Baggett and Summers Funeral Home, 736 S. Beach Street, Daytona Beach, FL. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M at the funeral home. Attendees are encouraged to participate with the sharing of a special memory.
