IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Vizi
Szurovecz
September 10, 1938 – November 4, 2021
Elizabeth Vizi Szurovecz
1938 ~ 2021
Elizabeth Vizi Szurovecz passed away in the evening on November 4, 2021, at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida. She had recently turned eighty-three years old. For the last two years she resided in Daytona Beach's The Gardens, but her long-time home was in Port Orange.
Born in Budapest, Hungary on September 10, 1938, to Arpad and Erszebet (Kozma) Vizi, Elizabeth survived an early childhood in Eastern Europe consumed by World War II and Soviet occupation. After the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, Arpad and Erszebet sent Elizabeth and her younger brother Joseph to escape through the Iron Curtain. Younger sister Anna was unable to join them due to a medical condition.
Elizabeth entered the United States in March 1957 at the age of eighteen. She settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with other Hungarians who escaped and soon formally became a naturalized citizen. In August 1958 she married Julius Szurovecz. Elizabeth had three children and worked as a seamstress and in the restaurant industry. She eventually moved to Daytona Beach, where she had her own sewing business. There she was also prominently involved in the Hungarian Community Church and Club, serving as a Deacon in the Church. She enjoyed studying astrology and sharing that knowledge with others.
Her parents and siblings preceded her in passing, her brother Joseph passing away in Georgia just a few months earlier. Elizabeth is survived by her three children, in order of age: Hedy Szurovecz, mother of Jennifer Foster and Alison Alexander/Edward; Mary Wilson, mother of Brittany Bach/Christian and Darryl Wilson; and Steven Szurovecz. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Madeline Alexander (Alison), Parker Bach (Brittany), and Abigail and Adelynn Wilson (Darryl). Additional extended family still lives in Hungary.
Elizabeth was spirited, persevering, proud of her heritage, and loved by many.
