IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Faun "Joyce"
Senatro
September 16, 1936 – November 1, 2023
Faun "Joyce" Senatro (Wonder) joined her husband, Xavier George "Sammy" Senatro, in heaven on November 1, 2023. Joyce and Sammy were happily married for over 65 years before his death in 2022.
Joyce was born on September 16, 1936 in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania to Craig Earl Wonder and Edith Mae Wonder. She grew up primarily in Pennsylvania with her older brother, Craig "Rex", younger brother Marvin and younger sister Joline "Jeanie". When Joyce was twelve the family moved to Daytona Beach. Around 1953, she met Sammy, who had recently been honorably discharged from the Army, and they were married, following her graduation from Mainland High School, in1954 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Daytona Beach, Florida. Together, they raised nine children, two foster children, and fostered dozens of infants through Catholic Social Services. Her greatest joy in life was raising her children and she loved hosting family gatherings for special occasions, or no occasion at all.
Joyce's experience fostering children waiting for adoption solidified her desire to help others in a more formal way. She decided to pursue this passion and while raising her family, she returned to school and graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor's degree in social work. She continued her education and obtained her master's degree in social work from Florida State University (Go Seminoles!). She worked for Catholic Social Services, Children's Home Society, and retired from Advent Health (Ormond Beach) as a Hospice Social Worker. She gave selflessly to help countless families through the grieving process. She was honored by the National Association of Social Workers Volusia Unit as the Social Worker of the Year in 1989.
After retiring, Joyce and Sammy took to the road and covered tens of thousands of miles RVing across America. They took their trip of a lifetime to Alaska with a caravan of other RVers, several who became lifelong friends. It was at this time of her life that Joyce began writing, and eventually published several books including First Class to America which took second place in the Florida Writers Association 2015 Royal Palm Literary Awards in the Unpublished Women's Fiction category. The Middle of Somewhere took first place in the same category in 2016. Her last book, God Has Dad's Face, was based on her mother's life and family. She dove into writing passionately like she did everything else. She loved the research part of her writing experience as much as she did the writing.
As an active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Port Orange, Florida, Joyce was on the Alter Guild, assisted with the church library, and participated in various other church activities. Joyce also actively supported F.A.I.T.H. (Fighting Against Injustice Towards Harmony) in Volusia County.
Joyce is survived by a brother, Marvin Wonder (June), her son Neil Senatro (Pamela), daughter Edie Biro (John), son Tim Senatro, daughter Faun Hoffmeier (Tony), son Chris Senatro (Rony), son Joe Senatro, daughter Patty Shephard, and son Ben Senatro. In addition, Joyce leaves 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren to carry on her legacy.
Joyce was preceded in death by Sammy in 2022. She was also preceded in death by her son Michael Senatro, grandson Jon Biro, granddaughter Tammy Newingham, brother Rex Wonder, sister Jeanie Antoine and her beloved miniature dachshund, Noli.
Joyce's family was blessed by the incredible life she and Sammy had, the loving memories created over so many decades, and the many life lessons they taught their family. The favorite being Joyce's closing reminder to her children and grand children in each Christmas letter – "Be responsible, respectful, and fun to be with!"
