Herbert Dennie Ellis, Sr., 81, of Daytona Beach, went to his heavenly home on May 27, 2013. Herb left this world to be reunited with his loved ones who preceded his death, which include his parents; sister, Margaret Curtis; brother-in-law, Bill Curtis; son, H. Dennie Ellis, Jr.; and many friends. Herb was born in Detroit, MI, moving to Daytona Beach in 1936. After graduating from Admiral Farragut Academy, he enlisted in the Army, serving as a Sergeant in the Korean War with the 3rd Infantry Division. Upon returning to Daytona Beach, Herb worked at his father's service station (Ellis Gulf Service), whose wrecker can be seen in many of the photos from the races on the beach. He quickly took over the family business which evolved into Herb's Dive Shop. Herb was a pioneer of SCUBA diving in this area and was frequently called upon by local officials for rescue/recovery in the Inlet and various springs. Once retiring from the SCUBA business, Herb decided to dabble in real estate, eventually designing and implementing marketing programs for time share resorts in Daytona Beach and Mexico. Herb was well known for mixing business with pleasure. Anyone who was fortunate enough to accompany him on one of his diving adventures returned with a greater respect for nature, a heightened sense of adventure, memories to last a life time and a smile in their heart. Herb joined the America Legion, Post 270, enjoyed motorcycles, traveling, camping, kayaking, swapping stories with friends, old and new, faithfully following the stock market and other internet adventures. Those left to cherish his memory are; son, Robert Ellis (Glenda); daughter, Elaine Schafer (Doug Stewart); 2 nieces; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and his friend Silvia Isele. He will be remembered by family and friends for his sense of humor, spirit of adventure, quick wit and the tenaciousness that allowed him to successfully pursue many diverse endeavors. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Indigo Manor, Levin Home Care, and Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler for their strength, guidance and never ending support. Services will be held at Baggett & Summers Funeral Home on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours will be Friday, May 31, 2013 between 5 and 7 p.m. The family would like to invite you to share in the celebration of life, immediately following the graveside service at the Blue Grotto located in the Halifax Harbor Marina.
