Obituary

Joan Paisley Hendricks passed away Jun 3, 2014 in Daytona Beach, Florida, at Halifax Hospital, where she had been confined for several days. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Ronald; two sons, Daniel P. Hendricks and Scott M. Hendricks; and her daughter-in-law, Lisa Hendricks, all of whom live in the area. She is also survived by a sister, Elinor Foust, of Ridgefield, California; a brother, Ralph Paisley, of Kent, Ohio; and a cousin, Carole Snow, of Charlottesville, Virginia. Joan was born in Toronto, Ohio, a small town on the Ohio River. She grew up in Toronto, where her father owned and operated the Paisley Funeral Home. She attended college at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and took her degree in Psychology there. She lived and worked in Cleveland for a time, then moved to Dallas, Texas where she met and married her husband, Ron. The couple moved to Philadelphia for a brief period and then to Binghamton, NY, where they resided for 30 years. They moved to Daytona Beach in 1991. In many respects, Joan seemed a lady from a different era. She had a composed, self-possessed manner that never left her, no matter what the provocation. It was an absolutely charming characteristic. And her sense of humor was impeccable. The term 'bookish' could have been invented for her, as she was a voracious reader. She was probably Book-of-the-Month Club's best customer for years. She managed to consume large portions of the 11-volume Story of Civilization, by Will and Muriel Durant, a true test of readership! She worshiped her e-reader. Her primary hobby was cooking and collecting and reading cookbooks. She owns - one estimates - well over a hundred of them, and she subscribed to several cooking magazines. Her family and friends benefited enormously from this love of hers. Although she was too gentle to be much of a disciplinarian, the family was required to have sit-down dinners every evening when her children were growing up. She also loved to collect owl figurines. She always retained her affection for her small home town of Toronto. She stayed in touch with its folks over the years, including the popular Toronto Day In Florida gathering held each year, for which she served as chairman for some time. She had planned to attend the All-School reunion this August in Toronto. She also loved her little family, and the members of Ron's vast one, and her husband, for she told him so often. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 from 2:00 P.M to 3:00 P.M at Cardwell, Baggett & Summers Funeral Home, 3571 S. Ridgewood, Port Orange FL 32129. A service of remembrance will begin at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of other remembrances, the family requests that donations be made to Halifax Urban Ministries, 215 Bay Street, Daytona Beach 32114.
