IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lawrence
Hammond
February 16, 1943 – November 22, 2021
Lawrence M. Hammond, age 78 of Port Orange, passed away Monday, November 22, 2021.
Born February 16, 1943 at Albany Medical Center in New York he was a son of the late Gilbert and Cora Forester Hammond. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Betsy and sister Shereta Gardner.
At seven years old, while living in Sanfords Ridge Hudson Falls, NY, Lawrence contracted polio during the New York polio epidemic. His illness prompted the family to move to Castleton, NY to be closer to the hospital that could care for and treat polio which Lawrence successfully overcame.
He graduated from Maple Hill High School in Castleton in 1961. He went on to attend two semesters at Hudson Valley Community College before starting work with Niagara Mohawk – Broadway Station working as a janitor. Lawrence worked his way from janitor to meter reader, meter reader to lineman, and lineman to underground splicer in Schenectady, NY. He eventually became the underground splicer foreman in Glen Falls where he would retire in 1998 at 55 years old.
Lawrence had a passion for outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, so much that he was an instructor of the New York State Bow Hunter's Education course.
After retirement he began traveling the country and ultimately settled in Port Orange, FL where he was able to enjoy retirement.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jeanine and her husband Jim of Ballston Spa, NY; son, Bryan Hammond of Little Falls, NY; and brother, Thomas Hammond and his wife Cassandra of Nassau, NY. He will also be sorely missed by five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Private services will be scheduled in New York at a later date.
Cremation services have been entrusted to Cardwell, Baggett, and Summers Funeral Home.
