Mass of Christian Burial for Lawrence Joseph (Larry) Summers, 80, of Daytona Beach, who died Friday, November 18, 2016, at his residence after a long and valiant battle with cancer, will be Tuesday, November 22nd, at 1:00pm at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church, Port Orange, with the Reverend Father Raymond O'Leary, Pastor Emeritus, officiating. Entombment will follow at Daytona Memorial Gardens. Visitation hours will be Monday evening, November 21st from 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Cardwell, Baggett and Summers Funeral Home, 301 Big Tree Rd., South Daytona. Serving as pallbearers are Christopher M. Ramey, Bryan L. Snell, Tyler J. Snell, J. Bryan Snell, James H. Justice, and Jeff Hurt.
Mr. Summers was born in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late John Francis and Lucille Augusta (Mudd) Summers. He was a graduate of Gwynn Park High School, Prince George's County, Maryland, and the Worsham College of Mortuary Science, Chicago, IL.
A U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of the Korean War, Larry worked at Arlington Memorial Funeral Home, St. Petersburg and Brett Funeral Home and Seminole Funeral Home in Seminole, Florida. In 1970, he moved his family to Daytona Beach accepting the position of General Manager and Funeral Director at Baggett-McIntosh Funeral Home in the newly built Holly Hill location. Within a year, he moved to the downtown Daytona Beach office on Beach Street, later purchasing the business known as Baggett and Summers Funeral Home, Inc. He was the president and CEO who, along with his staff, took great pride in providing the best customer service possible.
Mr. Summers was a member of the Florida Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, National Selected Mortician (NSM), and served as a lobbyist in Tallahassee for many years. He served as a board member for many philanthropic and several educational institutions including St. Paul's Catholic School and Father Lopez High School, both in Daytona Beach. He was a member of the Basilica of St. Paul's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Rotary Club of Daytona Beach since 1974 and a Paul Harris Fellow, the Optimist Club, Sertoma of Daytona Beach, the American Lung Association, Daytona Beach Chapter, the United Way and downtown Daytona Beach area business redevelopment efforts.
He was also a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club, the Halifax Club, Oceanside Country Club and Pelican Bay Country Club. He was very involved with the Daytona Beach Golf Club as a board member and instrumental in the building of the back nine holes. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, boating, spending time with his family and was highly active within the community.
Mr. Summers is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Deanna, three daughters, Lori Summers Wolfe, Daytona Beach, Kim Summers Snell, Gotha, and Pamela Grant Summers, North Port; son-in-law, Joseph Bryan Snell, Gotha; two sisters, Sr. Marie Lucille Summers, Marriottsville, MD and Evelyn (Nancy) Hedrick, Brandywine, MD; three grandsons, Christopher M. (Kimberly) Ramey, Riverview, and Bryan Lawrence and Tyler Joseph Snell, both of Gotha and many nieces and nephews. Larry will also be sorely missed by his precious Millie.
He is predeceased by his three brothers, John Francis, Jr., E. Gwynn, and Joseph S. Summers, all of Maryland. Arrangements are under the direction of Cardwell, Baggett and Summers Funeral Home, South Daytona, FL.
