In Loving Memory of
Maudlyn Rose Douglas
July 29, 1933 - January 22, 2024
___________________________________
Maudlyn R. Douglas was born on July 29, 1933, in Mandeville, Jamaica,
W.I. to Alfred and Mary Ranglin, together they had eight children.
Maudlyn married James H. Douglas II. Maudlyn and James Douglas' union
produced ten children, and these children had a total of exactly ten
grandchildren. They had several businesses together in Jamaica. Maudlyn
was instrumental in these businesses as she helped managed the books,
performed essential duties, and even worked as a seamstress. She
migrated to the US in 1969 to join her husband in Brooklyn, New York, for a
few years before moving their family to live in Roosevelt, Long Island.
Maudlyn and her husband teamed up to successfully guide all ten of their
children to graduate from high school. They encouraged their children to
attend college, serve in the armed forces, and work in various careers.
Maudlyn Douglas, according to her children, is a very courageous lady as
stated:
"She has always been there for her family despite facing many trying
circumstances while she took care of us. When she was sick, she
pretended to be well to care for us. When she was tired, she found the
energy to be there for us. And when our mother lacked provision, she
found the resources we needed. She raised her children well and was
there to help others with their children. Her life consisted of making a
better life for her children by often going without things that she sometimes
needed. Her focus and passion were her family, and she found the will to
be strong, patient, and hopeful so that her children would succeed in life.
Words alone cannot express the courageous acts our mother did for us.
People might say she was just an ordinary mother who did a good job
raising her children. However, we know better. The love that my brothers
and sisters have for our mother is great. We know that if she wasn't such a
courageous and God-fearing person, she wouldn't have been able to do all
she did and endure so much. Courage to some people might be doing
something heroic, but the definition is simpler. Courage is like my mother;
a person who does what she is convinced is the morally right thing to do for
others, especially her family, day by day despite facing obstacles that
others would sometimes rather escape from."
She also had personal work goals that she pursued like assisting others in
their home as a Home Health Aide. She subsequently obtained her CNA,
which led to her becoming a Nurse's Aide at Rockville Center Nursing
Home in Long Island. She worked as a private aide while working full time
to generate additional income to help her husband support their family.
Although she may appear to some to have a quiet disposition and humility,
she was very outspoken when needed. Her tenacity and drive focused on
providing better opportunities that would help her and her family. For
example, initially when she was working outside the home, she did not
have her driver's license, so she used the bus. She tried to get a driver's
license twice but failed the road test. Then without hardly anyone knowing,
she tried again and passed on the third try. This showed her determination
not to quit on things and hopefully should remind her children to do the
same.
Maudlyn retired with her husband in Florida. Then two years ago, she
returned to New York to live the last remainder of her life in Troy,
fellowshipping, offering praise and delightfully dancing before God with like-
minded believers at Redemption Church of Christ. She peacefully passed
away surrounded by her loving family and friends to be with her Lord and
Savior, Jesus Christ.
Maudlyn is survived by her children Shirley, Lee, Maxine, Brian, Carol, and
Daren as well as her stepson, Glaister. Her grandchildren are Shakira,
Rachel, Stacy, Jamal and Isaiah, Shane and Jarel, Marina and Marisa, and
Vision and Faith. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren. She is
preceded by her husband James H. Douglas II and her children James III
(Garfield), Patricia, Neville, and Karen. She is survived by two sisters and a
brother. She had some half siblings that also migrated to the US: Roy,
Vivette, Jacquline, and Dian who kept in contact with her prior to her
passing. She will be missed despite living a long life of ninety years as she
had already started telling us, "I am ready to go home" (to HEAVEN).
