Ronald "Ron" Vergani, 79, a resident of South Daytona for the past 49 years, passed away May 12, 2014. He was born on December 22, 1934 in Jersey City, New Jersey. The son of Anna (Gilmartin) and Galliano (Bill) Vergani. He moved to Daytona Beach in 1948 and graduated from Mainland High School in 1953. In 1954, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served overseas for two years. He returned to Daytona and served an additional 18 years with the Army Reserves, retiring as a Platoon Sergeant of the 841st Combat Engineer Battalion. He was employed as Planning Manager and Scheduling Engineer for the Florida State Department of Transportation, he retired in 1996. His favorite time was spent camping, traveling, watching football, dancing, spending time with family and volunteering at the homeless shelter in Daytona. He also served in church ministries, receiving the Basilica of St. Paul award, in which he was a faithful member. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Janis; son, Chris Vergani ( wife Myra); daughter, Lisa Lawton; grandchildren, Jason and Taylor Vergani, Kyle and Ethan Lawton; Sister-in-law, Joyce Gettel; nephews, Steven and Scott Gettel and his beloved extended family. A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, June 13, 2014 at 3:00 P.M at Cardwell, Baggett and Summers Funeral Home, 3571 S. Ridgewood Ave, Port Orange, FL 32129. Interment will be held privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
