Obituary

Mr. Shirley Augustus Smith, born May 12, 1926 in Shreveport, Louisiana has passed away January 12th, 2015 in Palm Coast, Florida aboard his yacht "Flying Low II". Mr. Smith was 89 and died of natural causes on his Yacht. He is survived by his wife Patricia Wood Smith and two sons, Shirley Smith Jr of Franklin, Texas; Shelby Smith of Rowlett, Texas, and his brother Don Smith of Daytona Beach, FL. Additionally Mr. Smith had 4 grandchildren: Lindsey, Kennedy, Dalton, and Sophie. He is preceded in death by his daughter Jaclyn Smith of Shreveport, LA. Mr. Smith was a loving husband and father with a rich life full of grand events reaching back before World War II and centered on the aviation business in the south east. In his approach to life he faced everything with a sense of humor and there wasn't anything he could not do. His story was truly "larger than life". He represented well the label of the "Greatest Generation". Mr. Smith was a navy aviator during World War II. At 14 he obtained his pilot's license and enlisted in the Navy at seventeen where he participated in the war in the pacific flying fighters and torpedo bombers. Afterwards, he was a major contributor to aviation in Shreveport, LA where he owned and operated Aero Enterprises and Falcon Air. In 2001, he received the Charles Taylor Safety Award from the FAA for 50 years of service with no infractions. More recently he owned SAS Aviation and managed the French Connection air show in Flagler County Airport.
