Obituary

Wallace "Wally" Gowett, of Port Orange, Florida, passed on Monday, January 16th, 2023, at Indigo Manor in Daytona Beach, Florida, with his wife and lifelong soulmate, Alice "Pelkey" Gowett, at his side. He was 98. He was born on January 14th, 1925, the son of Fred Gowett and Mary "Trombley" Gowett in South Plattsburgh, New York. He was one of thirteen siblings.

Wally enlisted in the Army in June of 1943, serving in World War II. As a combat engineer, he landed in Normandy and fought at the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne and through the following campaigns in Germany. Recently, a French delegation presented him with The French Legion of Honor Medal for his service in liberating France. He was a proud Veteran and often spoke to the liberties his service afforded us all.

After being honorably discharged in 1945, he worked in the railroad and construction trades before becoming employed as a civilian carpenter at Plattsburgh Air Force Base. He retired in the early 1980s to his current residence in Port Orange, Florida. He was an avid automobile enthusiast and a great sparring partner to any political debate.

Wally leaves behind his wife Alice, and a sister-in-law Patricia Davison of Peru, New York. He is the embedded uncle of several nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by his special neighbors in the Laurelwood Estates Community of Port Orange, who have gifted support over the past several years. In lieu of flowers the family ask you to consider a donation to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation:
