Obituary

Snell, Walter W. Walter White Snell, 87, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away at home on September 19, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey Johnson Snell, and sons, Joseph Bryan (Kim), and Walter John (Sonya), seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by his daughter, Rhonda Snell Wilson, in 2015.

Walter, known through his early years as "Skippy", was born in Daytona Beach in 1931, and graduated from Mainland High School . He attended the University of Florida for both his undergraduate and law degree. During college, he participated in the ROTC Program, obtaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean War and then Captain in the US Army Reserve and Florida National Guard. He returned to Daytona Beach in 1959 and started his general law practice that he continued for 47 years until his retirement in 2004. He also served as a federally appointed bankruptcy trustee for the Middle District of Florida Bankruptcy Court, a municipal judge for Port Orange, and Justice of the Peace for Volusia County from 1968-1972.

He was a life long member of the First Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Walter enjoyed camping, fishing, canoeing, and mostly traveling. He would often leave his law practice for several months to take his family on road trips to Mexico/California, Canada, and Alaska in 1979 by way of the unpaved Alaskan Highway. He later upgraded from a 17' travel trailer to a motor home that he and Audrey drove throughout the United States for extended periods, often serving as campground hosts in both state and national parks. Through the years, Audrey and Walt traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Turkey, Iceland, Tanzania, and Thailand. Walter loved the outdoors and shared his passion for traveling with others by organizing several RV caravans to Alaska and Canada. Each summer, two of his grandchildren at a time would join them for one of these cross country RV trips. Audrey and Walter's most memorable trip was to Europe in 1992, where they rented a car and camped for six weeks in a small pup tent.

? He was a member of the South Halifax Lions Club, Daytona Beach Jaycees (Pres. 1964), chairman of the Dixie Frolics (1962), chairman of the YMCA Building Committee (1968), and one of the founders of Community Outreach. He was also a board member at the Museum of Arts and Sciences and Halifax Historical Society for 40 years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Halifax Historical Society, 252 South Beach Street, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, 118 North Palmetto Avenue, in Daytona Beach at 4:00 pm on Monday September 24, 2018.
