Obituary

William "Bill" G. Thompson, 87, died peacefully at his home in Port Orange, Monday, June 2, 2014. He was the son of George R. Thompson, Sr., and Elin Johnson Thompson. William is preceded in death by his brothers, George Randolph Thompson, Jr., (Thelma), Robert "Bob" Thompson (Peggy); sister, Jane Thompson Billingsley. Bill is survived by his brothers, John Thompson, Ira Thompson (Jean) and sisters, Elin Thompson DeGraw (Allen), and Dorothy Thompson Wheeler (Bob). Uncle Bill will be sorely missed by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great great-nieces and nephews. Bill was a native of Port Orange, Florida and attended the Port Orange School. In 1944 he graduated from Mainland High School in Daytona Beach. Bill served two years in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Port Orange Volunteer Fire Department for forty years before it became a regular Fire Department. In 1946, Bill started his career as a master carpenter. He went on to become a general superintendent in construction until his retirement in 1990. Throughout his adult life, he was an avid bowler and golfer. Bill's family will remember him as devoting his life to his parents and especially to his four youngest brothers and sisters. At Bill's request, a graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 2:00 P.M at Woodland Cemetery, 399 Orange Ave, Port Orange, FL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Halifax Humane Society, 2324 LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, Florida 32124 or your favorite charity in memory of Bill Thompson.
