Obituary

William Agustus Walden, Jr., 74, sailed to Heaven on April 21. Born April 23, 1942 in North Adams, MA.

Son of the late William A. Walden Sr. & Leah Mercier Walden. Loving husband of 53 years to Ann Marie Caron Walden, Daytona Beach. Father of Lieutenant William A. Walden, III of Port Orange, FL and Jennifer Lynne Yelvington, Daytona Beach, FL. Proud grandfather of Dylan and Logan Walden of Port Orange, FL, father-in-law of Tina Walden and Jimmy Yelvington. He is a member of Epiphany Catholic Church.

As a young man, Bill was an exceptionally talented skier. He was on the Drury High School Ski Team, the ski patrol at Dutch Hill & ski instructor at many ski resorts in Vermont and New York. He served as a policeman for 5 years in MA. In Bill's retirement, he was an avid golfer and belonged to many men's groups including North Florida League, Honey Pots, & Pelican Bay Golf Association. Bill loved fishing and boating.

He enjoyed his role as Medicine Man with the YMCA Indian Chiefs, timer for Daytona Beach Swim Assoc. and Atlantic High School swim meets. He also volunteered for the Easter Beach Run for many years. Bill served on the board for the Villas at Pelican Bay and at the Ormond Beach Ocean Club Condo Assoc. Bill cherished the many times he spent with his grandsons.Upon retirement he and his wife became world travelers and enjoyed making many new & lasting friendships.

Bill was a 1960 graduate of Benington Catholic High School in Vermont, attended St. Francis Xavier Univ. Nova Scotia and earned his B.A. in Biology and Education at North Adams State College in 1967. In 1974 Bill attained his M.A. in Administration & Supervision at Florida Technology Institute which is now Univ. of Central Florida, and M.A. + Education Leadership from Nova University. His teaching career started at Mainland Senior High School as a Biology teacher and Junior Varsity basketball coach. He then became Assistant Principal at Mainland, Holly Hill Jr. High, Seabreeze Jr. High, Silver Sands Jr. & New Smyrna Middle School.

In 1993 he was appointed Principal of Deland Middle, then 1996-2004 Principal of Ormond Beach Middle School. In 2005, he retired as Principal at New Smyrna Middle School. He served as Adjunct Professor, Administrative Support Staff for Nova University from 1983-1991 training over 60 Volusia County administrators and supervisors, provided monthly workshops for all district substitutes and provided inservice for college interns. He was a member of the National Middle School Association, Florida League of Middle Schools, National Association of Secondary School Administrators, Florida Association of Secondary Schools Administration, and Volusia Association of School Administrators. He also was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, a member of the Deland Chamber of Commerce, the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce, School Enrichment Committee, volunteer chaperone for West Volusia Police Athletic League student trips and 3 house painting projects with the West Volusia Police Athletic League.

Bill attended Florida League of Middle School Conferences from 1990-1995 and became a presenter at these conferences from 1993-1995; he attended National Middle School Conferences 1992 & 1996 and became presenter in 1996 in Baltimore; from 1994-1996 he attended the Florida League of Middle Schools Leadership Conference; in 1994-1995 he was in the Management Training Institute I/D/E/A. Many successful programs developed under Bill's leadership included Project Harmony for which he received national recognition, SOSA, ESE Co-Teach and many others. He recognized the importance of working relationships and partnership with the Volusia County Sheriff's Dept., Florida Sheriff's Youth Camp, FFA Advisory, Disney World Aquaculture Research Unit and many others.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Friday, May 5, at Church of Epiphany, 201 Lafayette St., Port Orange, FL 32127. In lieu of flowers, contributions to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Dept., 142, Memphis, TN 38148. Tribute #10978717.
